Stadium SUPER Trucks Sand Sports Super Show Recap

Costa Mesa, Calif. (September 23, 2013) – On Friday September 20th, Robby Gordon and SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks invaded the opening day of the 2013 Sand Sports Super Show at the OC Fair and Event Center., for a night of practice, qualifying, and the Round No. 11 main event.

After multiple practice sessions, SST would take to the temporary constructed course for a best of 2-lap qualifying session. Justin Lofton, edged out Wisconsin native Keegan Kincaid by .005 to capture the quickest time with a lap of 58.222.

After a six-car invert Mike Jenkins of Plano, Texas, paced the 15-lap SST final to green. Craig Potts would jump out to the early lead, but quickly lose the handle on the No. 59 truck resulting in a complete spin and losing multiple positions.

Fourth starting Robby Gordon wasted no time getting to the front of the field racing back to the start/finish line first ahead of P.J. Jones and Lofton.

Gordon and Lofton would remain the class of the field racing away after a Lap-7 caution. A hard charging Lofton would be glued to the bumper of the No. 7 corner after corner, but would lose his chance after striking a water barrier that was nudged into the racing surface.

Gordon would go on to capture his third SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks win of the season; he was followed to the finish by second place Keegan Kincaid and third finishing Apdaly Lopez.

Second running Justin Lofton would encounter mechanical issues coming to the finish line dropping him to a fifth place finish.

As the second day of the 2013 Sand Sport Super Show closed, right next-door another full night of Stadium SUPER Trucks racing would take to the track for another wild night of action.

As the Stadium SUPER Trucks took to the track for the best of 2-laps qualifying session. It was Robby Gordon’s time as he continued right where he left off the night before laying down the quickest lap of all competitors with a 58.372.

Saturday night’s final would also see a six-car invert and for the second night in a row Mike Jenkins of Plano, Texas, would pace the 15-lap SST final to green. Apdaly Lopez would race out to the early lead before Jenkins would enter the second turn too fast resulting in a complete roll over.

Lopez would lead the first three laps, before fourth starting Justin Lofton would take over the lead entering the dirt stadium portion of the racecourse. Lopez would get loose coming to the start/finish line loosing a tremendous amount of ground to the sixth starting Robby Gordon.

With Lofton out to a commanding lead, Lopez would spin in the big sweeping corner allowing Gordon to drive past into second place.

In a repeat of the night before Gordon and Lofton would remain the class of the field racing away after a Lap-6 caution. The hard charging Lofton would hit his marks corner after corner showing the No. 7 around the tricky racecourse. Lap-10 would see Gordon cut into the lead of Lofton, but a small bobble would allow Lofton to pull away.

The Southern California native would go on to capture his third SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks win of the season; he was followed to the finish by second place Robby Gordon and third finishing Apdaly Lopez.

The Sunday finale of the 2013 Sands Sports Super Show would feature round No. 13 of the SPEED Energy Stadium Super Trucks competition.

Just as the two days prior, Stadium Super Trucks would take to the track for two practice sessions, before the best of 2-laps qualifying session. Justin Lofton continued where he left off the night before laying down the quickest lap of the weekend. Gordon would qualify second quick with a 57.817 after a 1 second penalty being applied to the qualifying time of P.J. Jones.

Sunday afternoon’s final would see a six-car invert with Apdaly Lopez pacing the 18-lap SST final to green. Lopez would lead lap-1 followed by Sheldon Creed and Keegan Kincaid.

After a Lap-6 restart, Gordon would have a hard landing in the sand causing him to roll over and acquire heavy body damage. Cosmetic damage to the body would not hinder Gordon’s race to the front, as he would continue, to the midst of a large array of cheers from the crowd.

Time would extinguish Gordon’s quest for his second win of the weekend as the young Sheldon Creed, would roll to his second SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks win of the season; he was followed to the line by Lofton and third finishing P.J. Jones.
