Enseñada, Mexico – Team Gordon’s run for the Baja 2000 trophy fell short 599 miles into the race’s 1750 mile course after a water pump gave way, eventually overheating the engine. The pump was repaired three times, but initial damage to the engine’s heads ultimately ended the race.

Gordon started third and quickly took over first position in the race with his Ford-powered Trophy Truck. At the time of the water pump’s demise, the CD-2/Menards truck was running fourth, less than 30 minutes behind the leader.
