Robby Gordon and his No. 7 Jim Beam Chevrolet team are already heating up the competition for the NASCAR Nextel Cup 2006 season boasting an impressive 13th-place finish in the Daytona season opener. Looking toward this weekend’s homecoming event, the California native will look to ride the momentum of last week and continue his successful surge under the West Coast sun.

Jim Beam Fast Facts:

  • Jim Beam on Board – Sunday’s Auto Club 500 is the second of 12 events that Jim Beam will be the primary sponsor of the No. 7 Chevy Monte Carlo. 2006 marks the second year of Jim Beam’s sponsorship of Team Gordon. Dedicated to socially responsible drinking, Jim Beam launched their awareness program, drink smart®, in 1995 as an educational program that communicates the importance of responsible consumption by adults of legal purchase age that choose to drink. drink smart® means: If you’re of legal age and you choose to drink, do so responsibly; Do not drink if you’re under 21; Don’t drive drunk; If you can’t drink smart – don’t drink at all. Harrah’s and Menards will continue as associate sponsors.
  • Testing, Testing – Robby Gordon Motorsports will be running Chassis No. 107 during this weekend’s event. Chassis 107 saw racing action at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in October and recently enjoyed a successful test session at Kentucky Speedway during Speedweeks.
  • DEI Power SurgeGordon’s average finish since switching to DEI engines at Phoenix International Raceway last fall is 11.7.The proof is in the numbers: an eighth-place performance at Phoenix, a 14th-place finish in the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway and skirting the top-10 in 13th at the Daytona 500. Gordon’s in good company. Only Ryan Newman (7.3), Tony Stewart (8.0), Mark Martin (9.3), Casey Mears (9.7) and Greg Biffle (11.3) have higher average finishes over the same stretch.
  • Daytona Rewind – Robby Gordon and the No. 7 Jim Beam Chevrolet made the fifth-biggest gain (13 positions) during the last 20 laps of racing action at the famed superspeedway. With 20 laps to go and in 26th position, Gordon ultimately crossed the finish line in 13th making up an impressive amount of ground following a cut tire and crash in turn 2.
  • Cali Facts – In seven Cup starts at the two-mile oval, Gordon has captured one top-10 and two top-15 finishes.
  • Meet the Driver – Fans can catch Gordon signing autographs from 6 p.m.-8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 23 at California Speedway’s Fontana Racefest. The event will be held in the center midway between Gates 12 and 14. Gordon will also sign autographs at the Robby Gordon Motorsports souvenir trailer on Sunday, Feb. 26 from 8:50 a.m.-9:35 a.m.
  • California Kid Returns Home – Gordon will enjoy a homecoming of sorts this weekend. The California native hails from Orange and has maintained his West Coast off-road racing shop, Robby Gordon Off-Road, since April 2003 in Anaheim. Robby Gordon Off-Road is a race shop for off-road enthusiasts and is also used as a race shop for Gordon’s off-road racing pursuits.
  • Hear It Got a scanner? Tune it to 469.4500 or 463.6500 to hear Robby Gordon Motorsports team communications during the race.
  • Cup Standings – Heading into the second race of the season, Gordon is a mere 61 points out of the top spot and will make his second of five qualifying attempts at clinching a spot inside the top-35 Nextel Cup teams guaranteeing a starting position regardless of qualifying status for the remainder of the year.

Robby Gordon’s Quotes on California and the start of the 2006 season:

“I’m happy to be heading home this weekend and enjoying the successful momentum we’ve got going with our team right now. After testing at Vegas and Kentucky, we changed the bodies around a little bit, and I’m certain we’ve got a good race car for this weekend that will perform at the same level as last week. I feel really good about our engine program with DEI and our consistency over the past three races back to Phoenix last season. We’re ahead of the game already with a shop full of prepared cars, and not only that, but a lot more structure and confidence in our overall program and direction. I’m expecting to be in Victory Lane sometime this year, and I couldn’t think of a better place to start than California.”
