Talladega – April 16, 2000

Talladega, AL – Gordon’s Menards Ford qualified 34th at Talladega, but its mettle was much stronger in the race. Gordon ran to fifth-place in the first stint of the event showing his hand as a contender for the day. His car was fantastic in the draft. On the first pitstop, however, Gordon’s crew had a problem with the left front tire and Gordon was taken out of the draft. He would never recover as the lead pack was traveling some two seconds faster a lap than the cars without drafting help. On lap 136, one lap down to the leaders, Gordon was involved in a 19-car chain reaction wreck on the front straight. He was forced to retire from the damage and finished 37th.

Starting position – 34th

Finishing position – 37th (contact)

Laps – 136/188
